Turning a Rudiment Into a Real-World Musical Idea
At Gavin Payn – Online Drum Lessons, one of my favourite ways to teach is by turning a simple concept into something musical, inspiring, and—if we’re honest—occasionally mischievous. In this new video performance, I explore how the 11-stroke roll can leap off the practice pad and become a creative tool on the drum kit. By shifting where the roll lands inside the bar and exploring different orchestrations around the drums, I aimed to show new students exactly how a rudiment can shape a musical moment. Influences That Sparked the Solo’s Direction
This solo may feature my own style, but its roots reach back to my earliest inspirations. I borrowed the rolling triplet charisma of Art Blakey and blended it with the contemporary groove architecture of Keith Carlock. Combining those ideas with the 11-stroke roll helped create phrasing that feels both grounded and adventurous. It’s the sort of musical exploration I encourage when working as an online drum tutor or helping players who search for a drum teacher online and want more than just exercises—they want ideas that spark creativity.
Engineering the Performance So Every Detail Is Heard
Capturing the performance meant paying as much attention to the sound as the playing itself. I used a clipper subtly on the close mics and the drum bus to smooth out peaks without removing the natural dynamics that make a live performance exciting. Every drum was tuned with intention: toms set to resonate without humming endlessly, and the snare balanced to let the 11-stroke roll speak clearly.
